What is Cyber bullying? What kids Need to Know

“Cyber bullying” is when a child, preteen or teen is tormented, threatened, harassed, humiliated, embarrassed or otherwise targeted by another child, preteen, teen using the Internet, interactive and digital technologies or mobile phones.
Differences and Similarities Between Cyber bullying and Cyber Stalking
  • Cyber bullying occurs between children and youth
  • Cyber stalking has adult involvement, whether the stalking is done adult to adult, or adult to youth or child
  • The intention of both Cyber Bullying and Cyber stalking is to put the victim or the person targeted in distress
What would Cyber bullying look like if there were no screen to hide behind?
  • If you wouldn’t say it if your mom or dad or teacher was sitting beside you, don’t send it
If you say it our loud and it sounds wrong, don’t send it
What you should do as a citizen of the world? As a citizen of the world, you need to:
  • Know the difference between ratting and reporting or tattling and telling
  • Make the right choices with your behavior
  • Keep others safe and out of harm’s way
  • Know how and when to take action
It doesn’t stop without adult intervention
You have to tell.
Tell an adult you trust.
Ask what s/he will do with that information.
If you get a message that makes you feel uncomfortable and breaks rules that you have been taught;
STOP
BLOCK
TELL

Some Statistics on Cyber Bullying

Here is a tip to remember:
What is a secret between best friends today, including passwords, is a great piece of internet gossip tomorrow, for the world to know. One post that is personal and private information about another can be sent all over various web sites, and can be hurtful, humiliating and embarrassing.
That is bullying behavior . So be careful and follow these easy and stay safe tips!
  • Watch what you open
  • Know the message sender
  • Don’t open attachments from unknown sources
  • If you receive an inappropriate email, block the sender, keep the email. It may be needed for evidence later
  • Don’t hit the send button too fast!

What Can You DO?

Action:
TALK to your parents about this. Know that their fear is real and they often don’t know what to do about it.
BE ACCOUNTABLE. The technology is owned by your parents.   It is their choice how they choose to let you access it. Use it wisely.
RUN through a scenario of what support looks like for you. Let them know that you want to be able to tell them what is going on without fear of losing privileges
TELL your parents what you will do if you are targeted to help alleviate their fears. Show them that you have a plan.
DON’T live online. LIMIT yourself and your usage.
DON’T cheat on the household rules, even when you are not at home.
