Today, the trial of Lori Drew was closed, with a mistrial being declared. You remember Lori Drew? She was the mom who allegedly set upa fake "14 year old boy" identitiy on MySpace and started conencting with Megan Meiers, a 14 year old girl, who fell completely for this boy "Josh". Ms. Drew allagedly set up this conversation because she was upset at what Megan may or may not have been saying about her own daughter. Megan committed suicide when "Josh", her online boyfreind, recanted his love for her and told her that the world would be a better place with out her. Megan proceeded to make that wish a reality and hung herself in her closet. Her mom found her there, dead. Lori was never actually charged with murder, rather she was indicted under the federal Computer Use and Fraud Act. Part of the reason for this was because, at the time, Missouri had no state law against cyber harrassment. They do now. Instead, Federal prosecutors claimed jurisdiction under MySpace,located in Beverley Hills, claiming that Ms. Lori Drew was guilty of violating the agreement thorugh MySpace which states there should be no harrassment or identity fraud. Instead, Drew was chaged with 3 lesser misdemenors. Megan Meier's mother sat in the court room and listened to the verdit. How hard must that have been. The good news, if there is any, is that this case was the first national case of Cyberbullying in the United States, and we can be sure that there will be more law developed around this challegeing phenomenon. Sadly, it has come at the cost of a youg girl's life. Your comments are welcome.

Edwin My stepson, Edwin, could not take it anymore, he killed his abuser who tormented him since grammer school. Now he is facing aggrevated murder. This was not the answer, where are the parents of the abuser, why don't children confied in someone or tell someone that this is happening. This is all so senseless, I miss him so much. |

That is so sad That is the saddest story i have ever heard, that mom doesn't deserve to have any kids and i really hope that she goes to jail, she is so pathetic and stupid what a rotten and horrible person. I send my sympathy to that poor girls family. |

To answer your question, Margie .... "why don't children confied in someone or tell someone that this is happening." The reason they don't do this is most likely because they've tried it before and not gotten a proper response from an adult. They are told to stop being so sensitive, to buck up, or to ignore it. None of this is helpful advice. Eventually, the child learns he or she can't trust the adult to help him solve his problems and that is usually when he decides to take matters into his own hands. |

It's time It's a crime when an adult bullies a child. That this woman is getting only a slap on the wrist makes it an even greater crime. I think I understand the loss Megan's mother is feeling. My son took his life 4 years ago because of bullying at school. Bullying has become a plague that must be stopped. It affects the lives of so many people. It takes away self-respect, self-esteem and even takes lives. The residual affects are life long. We need to become involved. Step up, step in, educate, it doesn't matter how, just get involved. It's time we all took a stand! |
